Approximately 1000 Visitors Witness BHOD Armed Forces Display

The Black Hills Ordnance Depot's Armed Forces day program held Sunday, May 19th was attended by approximately 1,000 persons of surrounding communities and residents of Igloo.

The afternoon activities started with a parade led by the Provo High School baton twirlers and Provo schools colorful band of 53 pieces directed by Charles Swanson. A color guard followed by the National Guard contingent of Edgemont marched to the Security Building parking lot where the Black Hills Ordnance Depot Commander Colonel Don M. Hoffman in his address of welcome stressed the importance of the Open House idea of Armed Forces Day. He emphasized the fact that such implements of war as the Nike and block-busters which were on display are America's guarantee of strength during times of peace and symbols of defense in time of war.

Captain Jerry Cappa, announcer of the day, directed the record crowd to various displays and demonstrations of the Depot's daily operational activities. The displays and activities included the Fire Department, the U. S. Army Hospital, the National Guard, the Transportation Division, the Storage Division and the Nike.

Prior to and at the conclusion of the scheduled program the guided diesel engine and transportation bus tours through the restricted area accommodated about 700 adults and youngsters. They had the opportunity of seeing and learning about the vastness of BHOD's storage facilities and methods used in handling ammunition.

Major John Blette who had chaired the various committee sessions for Armed Forces Day remarked, "The success of the days activities and the enthusiam of the hundreds of persons that attended exceeded the anticipation of the members of the planning committee."
