Survivors include a son, Kenneth Muhm, New Boston, Texas; a daughter, Juanita Muhm, Rapid City; a stepdaughter, Sandra Brigando, Chicago; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brothers Eugene Muhm, Edgemont, and James Muhm, Hot Springs; and sisters Delores Naasz, Hot Springs, and Shirley Boman and Teresa Evans, both of Edgemont.
Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at McColley's Chapels of the Hills in Hot Springs, with the Rev. Morris Nelson officiating.

EDGEMONT | Edward Eugene Muhm Sr., 77, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, at home.
Survivors include his sons, Edward Muhm Jr. and William Muhm, both of Rapid City, and Thomas Muhm, Sioux Falls; five grandchildren; his sisters, Delores Naazs, Hot Springs, Shirley Bowman, Edgemont, and Teresa Evans, Edgemont; and a brother, James Muhm, Hot Springs.

Ruth Widner, 94, of Thompson Falls passed away Monday, Feb. 25, 2013 at the Hillside Manor Nursing Home in Missoula.
Services will be held Friday, March 1 at 11 a.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Thompson Falls. Pastor Char will officiate the service. Mrs. Widner will be buried at the Thompson Falls City Cemetery following the church service.
Mrs. Widner was born July 9, 1918 in Chadron, Neb. She grew up primarily in southwest South Dakota where she helped her dad herd sheep on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and haul lumber to various communities. When her mother remarried, she lived in Igloo, S.D. where her stepdad, Harley Jones, was stationed in the service. They also lived in a CCC camp in Calcite Canyon near Rapid City, S.D. Ruth lived through the depression wearing clothes made from flour sacks. At the age of 15 she was involved in a tremendous school bus wreck that left her with multiple life-long injuries. She was unable to finish high school.
On May 10, 1939, she married Cecil Widner in Deadwood, S.D., and lived in Lead where Cecil worked in the Homestake Mine. In 1941 they moved to Thompson Falls where Cecil worked in the timber industry until 1963 when an injury caused a permanent disability. Ruth cleaned homes and washed dishes at the local cafes. Together they raised six children.
Mrs. Widner was a member of the Rebeka Lodge for over 40 years until it disbanded. She was also a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church and a member of the community for 71 years.
Her hobbies included crocheting blankets, quilting, reading Zane Grey books, and transplanting wildflowers into her gardens. She was also a foster parent to five children. Later in life, she was a volunteer at the elementary school in Thompson Falls and went to garage sales frequently.
Survivors of the immediate family include two sons, Harley Huntley and his wife Eileen, and John Widner and his wife Bertha and two daughters, Twyla Slippey and D'Elva Tlustos. Ruth is blessed with 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Widner is preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Cecil, two sons, William and Don, and a grandson, Patrick Widner.
RAPID CITY It is with great sorrow that our Fr. Reuben Valades passed away Tuesday, March 5, 2013, at the VA- BHHCS in Fort Meade.
Fr. Reuben was born Sept. 26, 1929, to Catarino and Andrea (Uvalle) Valades in Edgemont.
Fr. Reuben graduated salutatorian in his class of 1947. He then worked in Wade's Grocery Store and in the Southern Hills Bank from 1949 to 1952. He served his country in the Korean War from 1952 to 1954.
When he returned from the Army, he attended Chadron State College from 1955 to 1957. He then graduated from Black Hills State University with a Bachelor of Science in Education degree in 1959. He taught conversational Spanish for one year in Lead and taught Freshman and Sophomore English at Provo High School in Igloo for three years.
In 1963, Fr. Reuben attended St. Mary's College in St. Mary, KY, where he did his undergraduate studies for the priesthood. From 1966 to 1970, he attended Immaculate Conception Seminary in Conception, MO.
Fr. Reuben was ordained June 8, 1970, by the late Bishop Harold J. Dimmerling. His first assignment was as an associate pastor at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Rapid City. From 1973 to 1981, he was assigned to Sacred Heart Church in Philip and St. Mary's Church in Milesville.
He also worked with the Haakon County Alcohol Center, the Alcoholics Anonymous and Alanon Groups, Meals on Wheels, and Haakon County Area Right to Life. In addition, he served as a hospital chaplain and was a member of the Ministerial Association.
From 1981 to 1986, he was assigned to Christ the King Church in Presho. In July 1986, he was assigned to St. Joseph's Church in Gregory and in 1990, Sacred Heart Church in Burke was added to his mission. In 1992, he was assigned to New Underwood and Lakeside. He retired from that parish in 1999.
Fr. Reuben will also be remembered by his love for music, especially the guitar which he mastered and the song he wrote titled, "Walking Down Those Forty Days of Lent."
In addition to his many friends that he served as their parish priest, he leaves one brother, Salvador "Chuck" of Sturgis; one sister, Inez Martinez, Chadron, NE; and numerous nephews and nieces and their families.
His father and mother; a sister, Alice Gnojek; and three brothers, Catarino, Jr., Vincent F., and Gabriel preceded him in this journey. The family also remembers Sister Agnes Holzapfel, a longtime companion and also his loyal dog "Benji," who also preceded him in death.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., with 7 p.m. Christian Wake Service with Rosary today at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help.
Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Friday, March 8, at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help with the Most Rev. Robert D. Gruss, Bishop, presiding and other priests of the diocese con-celebrating. Burial will follow at 3 p.m. at the Edgemont Cemetery with military honors provided by the Hot Springs American Legion Post 71 Honor Guard and the South Dakota National Guard.
A memorial has been established.

RAPID CITY | John L. Parks Sr., 86, passed away Sunday, March 17, 2013, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
John was born Sept. 5, 1926, in Rapid City but he grew up in Hot Springs. His parents were James F. (Colonel) Parks and Rosanna Henrietta (Sieger) Parks. His grandfather was John F. Parks, the senator who submitted a bill to the South Dakota legislature that would later create Custer State Park.
John finished his schooling during World War II and was drafted in 1944. He was stationed in the Philippines when the war ended and was then moved to Japan as part of the occupation army until he was given an honorable discharge in 1946. He then moved to Igloo to be with his family, but went to work at the Provo power plant, two miles away, part of the Black Hills Power and Light Company. While living there, he met and later married Donna Harbaugh.
Soon he was transferred to a new plant in Osage, Wyoming, where the couple lived for 12 years. During that time, three children were born to Johnnie and Donna -- John L. Jr. in 1949, Dana J. in 1951, and Julie Ann in 1957.
In 1960, the company transferred John again, this time to Rapid City to help start up another new plant, named the Ben French Station. Through those many moves, he stayed with Black Hills Power as a control operator until he retired in 1988.
Besides the work, he enjoyed tramping the hills looking for arrowheads, hunting deer or picking up carving wood. He got a boat and fished and pulled skiers. At one time, he won the Arbor Day Award, because he planted over a hundred trees and shrubs on his place on Sheridan Lake Road. He collected, restored and sold antique furniture. Once he said he had a paint brush growing on his hand, because it was there all the time.
He took pride in his house, garden, and apple trees. But most of all, he enjoyed his kids, grandkids and friends.
Survivors include his wife, three children, seven grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren (and there will be more) and his sister, Virginia Rose Tubbs of Edgemont. He was a well-loved husband, father and grandfather and we will miss him.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at Behrens-Wilson Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 21, at the funeral home with Pastor Willard Olsen officiating. Interment will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis with military honors provided by the Rushmore VFW Honor Guard.

CLEARFIELD, UTAH | Alfred Norman "Bud" Breen, 95, passed away Friday, March 22, 2013, at home. He was born the ninth of ten children on Oct. 28, 1917, in Napoleon, ND, to Michael H. and Anna Kirsch Breen. He married LuVerne Francis Doonan on Jan. 4, 1938, in Ipswich, SD. Lu was the love of his life for over 74 years.
Bud served in the U.S. Army and continued to work security for the government for 30 years. He worked at Black Hills Army Depot until 1965 when he transferred to Hill Air Force Base where he retired in 1975. After retirement, he worked at the IRS for seven years. He was a huge Utah Jazz fan and loved golf, yard work, gardening, and cooking. The stories of his youth and family were always so entertaining.
He is survived by his wife, LuVerne of Clearfield; children, Mark (Barbara) Breen of Holdridge, NE, Judy Roth of Indianapolis, IN, Karen (Denis) Smith of Reno, NV, and Bob (Candice) Breen of Roy; 18 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dolly Easthagen of Conroe, TX.
Family and friends may gather from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., with a 7:30 p.m. Vigil with Rosary today at Myers Mortuary, 250 N. Fairfield Road, Layton.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 27, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 210 S. Chapel St., Layton, UT. Interment, with military honors will be at the Ogden City Cemetery.

Donald Oscar Mueller went home to be with his Lord on Easter Sunday March 31, 2013. He was born March 23, 1936, the youngest of five children, at the family farmhouse near Madison, South Dakota, during a blizzard. He was the son of Oscar Charles Mueller and Ella Bertha (Krueger) Mueller. The family moved to the Black Hills area of South Dakota when he was 9 years old. He accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior at the age of 12. He graduated from Provo High School in 1954. He graduated from Omaha Baptist Bible College in 1958 in Omaha, NE. While in college he met the love of his life, Bernadine Lesher. They were married on June 23, 1957 in Pontiac, IL. Two daughters were born to them. On May 26, 1961 he was ordained to the ministry by Temple Baptist Church of Omaha. While in Omaha, Donald worked as a carpenter and had previously worked for the Black Hills Forest Service. He pastored five Baptist churches in the Midwest region: Dunlap, IA, Smith Center KS, Alta Gardens, IL, and Belmond, IA. In 1976 he came to Bancroft, IA where he preached the gospel, and served his church and community faithfully for 30 years. He retired from the ministry and First Baptist Church, but not from his faith, on September 3, 2006. He entered Heritage Nursing Home in Bancroft on April 1, 2010, where many angels tended to him with loving care.
Donald's hobby was doing wood working, and he lovingly crafted beautiful pieces for family and friends to enjoy. He also loved music, especially the old gospel hymns, and loved to sing. While in college he sang in men's quartets, also singing in quartets in his churches throughout the years. His favorite Bible verses were Proverbs 3:5-6, which tell us "to trust in the Lord with all our hearts, not to lean upon our own understanding, to acknowledge Him in all our ways, and then God will direct our paths". Donald cherished these verses, and lived his life by them.
Donald is survived by his loving and faithful wife of 55 years, Bernadine, of Bancroft; his two loving daughters, Pamela (Stephen) Johnson of Columbia City, IN and Marcia (Douglas) Swope of Port Orchard, WA; five grandchildren, Sarah (Max) Ray of Circleville, OH, Avery Johnson of Columbia City, Dustin (Jessica) Swope of Warner Robins, GA, Rachel Swope of Waterloo, IA, and Holly Swope of Port Orchard, WA; and two great grandchildren, Annison and Ashton Swope. He is also survived by two sisters, Elberta Fellows of Salt Lake City, UT, and Loretta (Vernon) Smith, of Greenville, SC; and a brother in law Ronald Wilhelm of Colorado Springs, CO; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Darlene Ranne, and Estella Wilhelm.
Daniel J. Garvis, 65, of Iowa City, formerly of Moline, passed away Monday, Dec. 9, 2013, at his home.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13, at Rafferty Funeral Home, 2111 1st St. A, Moline. Visitation will be 11 a.m. until the time of services at the funeral home. Burial will be at National Cemetery, Arsenal Island, with military honors conducted by the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 299. Dan was born April 7, 1948, in Vermillion, S.D., son of Victor and Dorothy Rayman Garvis.
Dan graduated from Moline High School and Black Hawk College. He served four years in the U.S. Navy, including one year in Vietnam.
Dan had been employed at John Deere Distribution Center, Milan, iWireless Center, Moline, and volunteered at the Iowa Veterans Hospital, Iowa City.
Survivors include his wife, Sandra; stepdaughter, Kayla; stepgrandson, Liam; parents, Vic and Dorothy Garvis, Moline; brothers, Mike (Pam) Garvis, Moline, and John Garvis, Chicago; sister, Georgina (David) Svec, St. Joseph, Mich.; nieces and nephews, Tris, Tim, Abby and Gina Garvis and Madeline, Lydia and Isabelle Svec.
He was preceded in death by a stepson, Joshua Sanders.
Our country called him to serve. He led a good life. Now the Lord has called him home.

Joan Marie Moore, 75, resident of Vancouver, WA since 1965, passed away at Kaiser Sunnyside in Clackamas, OR. She was born on June 21, 1937 to Gustov and Elizabeth (Fokken) Imme in Raymond, SD.
Joan married Darrell Nathan Moore on Sept. 1, 1996 in Las Vegas, NV.
She retired from BPA as a computer programmer.
She enjoyed bowling, golf, gardening, and spending her winters in Arizona.
Joan is survived by her husband, Darrell; daughter, Cindy (Doug) Shields of Home Valley, WA; sons, Charles Hardman (and Jeanette) of Vancouver, WA and Casey L. Surrounded by family, Karen Frances Smith slipped away peacefully on Sunday, June 23, 2013 in Reno, Nevada. Karen was born to parents LuVerne and Alfred Breen on May 28, 1943 in Greeley, Colorado. She attended Provo High School in Igloo, South Dakota and graduated in 1961.
After graduation Karen lived in cities including; Denver, San Francisco and Phoenix where she met and married Denis Smith in 1968. Together with their children they lived in New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Nevada, Texas and returned to Nevada in 2009. She enjoyed a career at Western Nevada Community College and Lone Star College, in Texas, where she retired in 2008.
She was preceded in death by her sister Linda Ahern and her father Alfred Breen.

STURGIS | Dorothy Ann Getsgo, 83, Sturgis, died on Thursday, July 11, 2013, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Dorothy was born an only child to Frank and Anna (Shopmeier) Braddock in Franklin, Kansas, on January 24, 1930. She was born during the depression years, so when she was only three years old, her family moved to California, and by age four her family had moved to Lead, South Dakota. She attended grade school in Lead until the sixth grade when her family moved back to California during World War II and she continued school in San Pedro. The family later returned to Lead where she finished her last three years of high school and she went on to attended two years at Black Hills Teachers College.
On July 16, 1950, Dorothy married Leo J. Getsgo at her parents' home in Lead. When Leo finished his teaching degree in 1952, he got his first job in Palmer, Alaska, so they drove to the Alaska territory and began a two year adventure. They returned to the lower 48 in the summer of 1954, to Deadwood, SD, where Sharon was born. Dorothy and her family then moved to Armour, SD, where Susan was born, and they lived there from 1954 to 1961. The family then moved to the Black Hills Ordnance Depot in Igloo, SD, where Jane was born and lived there from 1961 to 1965. Dorothy, Leo, and their family then settled in Sturgis in 1965.
Dorothy loved to read all of her life and liked to travel all over the United States. She enjoyed taking long road trips with Leo. She had a passion for history and always had to stop at historical sites.
She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi since 1952, the United Methodist Womens Group since 1965, she was chair of the Mother Daughter banquet for many years, and was a well-loved member of the Bridgettes in Sturgis.
Dorothy is survived by her loving husband, Leo, and their daughters, Sharon (David) Dunn, Greely, CO, Susan (Richard) Dittman, Rapid City, and Jane Harty, Rapid City.
Duane Ardell Hedland was born May 12th, 1936 in Kindred, ND to David and Bernice (Stevens) Hedland. Duane grew up in Englevale, ND and when the family moved to Igloo, SD, he graduated from Provo (SD) High School in 1955.
He joined the Air Force at 19 and served his country for 4 years, with an additional 5 years in The National Guard. He was first based in South Carolina where he met and married the love of his life Jeanie (Pate) Hedland.
Duane had many jobs in life, including working with Rustad's in Kindred and for the last ten years driving the Barnes County Senior Services Bus in Valley City, a job he cherished.
Duane died July 11, 2013 at his home. He is survived by three daughters and one son; Lori King (Shane Furcht), Lynn Stasch (Bernie), Lisa Baasch (Donald) and Henry Hedland (Jordan Krueger), 11 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren, one brother Robert (Carolyn*) and one sister Marlys Fox (Joe).
He is preceded in death by his father David, his mother Bernice, stepfather Henry and sister Betty Ann.
The family would like thank the staff of Bridgeview Estates for everything that they have done for us. Special thanks goes to Hospice of Mercy Home Care of Valley City, providing comfort and support through his last days.
The funeral service for Duane will be 10:30 A.M., Tuesday, July 16, 2013 at Grace Free Lutheran Church, Valley City. Burial will be in Norman Cemetery, Kindred, and ND.
Visitation will be on Monday from 4:00-7:00 P.M. at the Oliver-Nathan Funeral Chapel, Valley City. A prayer service will be held there beginning at 7:00. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.

Roger was born in SD and served in the Navy for 6 years. He served as a captain with the Brentwood Police Reserve. Followed by a second career with Liberty High School and retired as a campus supervisor.
Roger is survived by his loving wife Esther Nelson; children Lyn Nelson, Sheri Garcia, Steven Nelson, Cordel Nelson, and Chris Rentuma. He had 11 grandchildren and 1 great grandson. He is also survived by his sister; Norma Thompson, brothers; Larry Nelson, Ronald Nelson.
Friends and family are invited to a memorial on Mon., Oct. 28, 2013 at Liberty High School, 850 2nd St. Brentwood. Burial to be at a later date.

Shirley Jean Doyle passed away peacefully on Sept. 13, 2013. She was born on Dec. 27, 1938, in Valentine, Neb., and moved to Arizona in 1964. She now resides in heaven with her beloved son Robert "Bob."
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Larry Doyle; sons John, Bill and Dave; grandchildren, Jennifer, Dani, Brandie, Shelby, and Casey; great-grandchildren, Zoe and Savea She graduated from Provo High School in 1956.
Her maiden name was Lolley.

HOT SPRINGS | Beverly V. Stearns, 95, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2013, at her home, surrounded by her three loving daughters.
Beverly V. Hill was born August 29, 1918, in Sturgis to John Hill and Nevetta Calhoun Hill O'Conner. When her father returned home from Germany/France following the first World War, the family moved to a ranch north of Newcastle, WY. This is where Beverly grew up and graduated from Newcastle High School. On August 2 1937, Beverly married Millard Buhn and three daughters were born to this union: Barbara, Nevetta and Tonia. On March 9, 1953, she married Charles Stearns and they lived and ranched at Provo for over 50 years.
Beverly was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Stearns; son-in-law, James D. Kane (Barbara); and her sister, Janice Stratton.
She is survived by her three daughters, Barbara Kane and son, Neal Ferdig, Nevetta (Ralph) Sieg and their children, Randy (Sonia) Sieg, Radeen (Jon) Roth and Bart Sieg, and Tonia Hand (Clint Gibson) and her children, Jordon (Yuri) Hand and Brandeth Hand; two sisters, Shirley Hill Lewin and Phyllis Hill Michaels; Charles Stearns's daughters, IvaBelle Honadel and Dorothy (Alfred) Honadel; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Beverly has been buried at the Evergreen Cemetery in Hot Springs and at her request a celebration of life will be held at a later date.
A memorial has been established in Beverly's name to benefit the Hot Springs Library.

David Wayne Short Bull, 60, of Rapid City, SD, died Monday, November 25, 2013 at Rapid City Regional Hospital. Wake services start at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, November 29, 2013 at Mother Butler Center in Rapid City. Mass of Christian Burial will be 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 30, 2013 at St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Parish in Rapid City with Father David Matzko as celebrant. Burial will follow at Pine Lawn Cemetery in Rapid City.
David was born, September 4, 1953 in Kadoka, SD to Norman Sr. and Elizabeth Grace (Prue) Short Bull. He grew up in Igloo, SD, until the closing of the Black Hills Army Depot and the family relocated to Rapid City. David graduated from Rapid City Central High School. David was a commercial painter by trade, but his true calling was being an artist. He enjoyed creating pottery, carvings and paintings and worked for Sioux Pottery for a time. David was a simple man and lived a quiet life. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and really enjoyed fishing and being outdoors.
David is survived by his mother Elizabeth Grace Larson of Rapid City; daughter Tessa (Tim) Rohrich of Rapid City and her children, Bailey and Brooklyn, daughter Tiffany Short Bull of Rapid City and her children, Justis, Jonah, and Jessa, daughter Sarah (Brian) Knutson of Gillette, WY and her children Aliyah, Abigail and Noah, daughter Kari Short Bull of Mission and daughter Callie Short Bull of Mission; son Marty Shaw of Rapid City and his child Ohitika, son Levi Short Bull of Bismarck, ND and son Cody Short Bull of Sioux Falls; five sisters, Norma Vermillion of Aberdeen, Linda Bordeaux of Mission, Marietta (Ronnie Clark) Short Bull of Fort Washakie, WY, Vonny Short Bull of Chandler, AZ and Lisa Short Bull of Bozeman, MT; two brothers, Tom (Darlene) Short Bull of Rapid City and Timothy (Tracy) Short Bull of Valley City, ND; and several nieces and nephews.

Patricia (Pat) Ann Alston, loving daughter, mother, and grandmother, passed away on November 5, 2013 at the age of 69. She was born in Hot Springs, South Dakota and made El Paso her home for the past 41 years.
Pat was a Certified Public Accountant with Clifford, Ross, Raudenbush & Cooper, LLC. Pat was an avid Miner fan, loved to read, travel and spend time with her children and grandchildren of whom she was very proud.
She is preceded in death by her husband James Alston, her first husband Jerry D. Taber, her father Earnest Jeppeson Sr., her brother Ernest Jeppeson Jr., and nephew Steven Jeppeson.
She is survived by her mother Margaret Jeppeson, son: Jamie Taber; daughter: Lori (Missy) Macias (Rick Macias); grandchildren: Richard James (RJ) Macias, Victoria (Tori) Macias, and Marcus Macias.
In Lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project which was a passion of hers and her late husband. ARDMORE - Funeral services with military honors for Mary L. Hunter of Ardmore, SD, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Chadron, NE, with Rev. Peter Bertram officiating. Burial will be at Duck Creek Cemetery, Ardmore.
Mary L. Hunter, 94, died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2013, at Regional West Hospital, Scottsbluff, NE.
She was born Oct. 19, 1919, to Carl Edward Bergquist and Ana Wilson Martinez Bergquist in Manila, Philippine Islands. As a young girl she lived in Guam, Shanghai, China, and Hankow, China, attending British or Parochial boarding schools.
In 1934, she and her family moved to Santa Rosa, CA. In 1936, she graduated from Santa Rosa High School as valedictorian of her class. She then attended the University of CA- Berkeley, graduating in 1940 with a math and history degree, and then in 1941 she received a teaching degree. She taught at Dos Palos, CA, and Daly City, CA, until joining the U.S. Navy Waves on July 19, 1944. She achieved the rank of Ensign and was honorably discharged on June 18, 1946.
On May 17, 1947, she married John W. "Jack" Hunter Jr. in Santa Rosa, CA. The couple moved near Ardmore, SD, where they ranched for over 50 years.
In 1956, Mary went back to her love of teaching and taught at Oelrichs, SD, Provo High School at Igloo, SD, and Edgemont (SD) High School, before retiring in 1974. Many of her past students attribute their success in life to Mary's teaching abilities.
After Mary retired from teaching she and her husband, Jack, operated Jack Hunter Sound, an outdoor sound company, traveling to hundreds of fairs and rodeos, where Mary was always known for her hospitality, taking pleasure cooking or caring for all who passed by their traveling home. Mary and Jack were selected as Pioneer Couple of the Year in 1999 for their dedicated services to High School Rodeo.
Mary was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church, P.E.O., American Legion and Waves National WIMSA.
She is survived by her son, John C. "Jack" Hunter (Laurel) Crawford, NE; grandchildren Kristen (Robert) Ferguson, Gordon, NE; Ross (Trisha) Hunter Ardmore, SD; Alicia (Rich Robertson) Hunter, Crawford, NE; and great-grandchildren Robin Ferguson, Reann Ferguson, Tristan Hunter, Ashley Hunter, Jack Hunter, Allison Owens and Hunter Owens.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Jack, and her brothers Edward and Ted.

Keith J. Coates passed away peacefully with his children and grandchildren by his side on Saturday morning, December 7, 2013 at the Clarkson Health Care facility in Rapid City.
Keith was born to "Kitty" and Leonard Coates on April 29th, 1928. He was born and grew up in his beloved Platte, South Dakota where he was well known for his exploits in baseball, basketball and football. He graduated from Platte High School in 1946.
He attended South Dakota State University for two years, took a year off to teach junior high in Platte, and then returned to SDSU, completing his education in 1951. Following a four-year stint in the Navy, he taught at Corsica High School for a year and then Platte for five years.
After completing his Master's Degree in 1961, he took his first administration job in Provo, SD for three years before moving to Rapid City in 1964. After a year of selling insurance he returned to education as the Athletic Director of Douglas High School, which was followed by five years as the principal of North Junior High, two years at South Junior High and ultimately, his dream job as principal of Central High School. After following a self-imposed limitation of staying at a school for no more than five years, he spent 18 years at the helm of Central High School as he felt that any other job in education was a demotion. He was a much admired principal by staff and students alike and was a constant presence at nearly every activity occurring at Central High School during and following his time as principal. Perhaps his favorite greeting in the world started with "oh, you were my principal at..." No one ever embodied the idea of "Once a Cobbler, always a Cobbler" more than Mr. Coates.
Upon retirement, he continued his full-time job as "Grandad" to not only his own seven grandchildren but to countless numbers of the grandchildren's teammates. He and wife Charollene logged thousands of miles (and went through three vans) attending graduations, athletic contests, musical performances and plays. No one ever enjoyed his/her grandchildren more than Mr. Coates.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Charollene of Rapid City; brother Gailen Coates of Mitchell; sons Mike of Fargo, ND, Kerry (Peggy) and Kip (Mary) both of Rapid City. He has seven grandchildren: granddaughters Stacey (Andy) Currie, Kristi (Lance) Roetman, and Lindsay Boyd and grandsons Kelly, Casey, Riley, and Keith Coates. He also has four great-grandchildren: Kaden & Kaci Currie and Kylar & Keelie Roetman.
Visitation will be at Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City on Tues., Dec. 10 from 5pm to 7pm, and then at the church for one hour before services on Wednesday.
Services are set for 11am Wed., Dec. 11, 2013 at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Rapid City with the Rev. Bob Jacobs officiating. A reception and luncheon will follow at the church. Interment with honors by VFW Post 1273 & SD Army National Guard will be at 2pm on Wednesday at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

CRAIG, COLO. | Berchia Leora Erickson, 72, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013, with her children at her side.
Berchia was born Aug. 14, 1941, in Ardmore, SD, to the late Raymond R. and Cleda Myrle Miller, joining siblings Edward, Lillie and Cleda. She spent her elementary years in Ardmore and graduated from Provo High School in Igloo, SD.
She dedicated most of her life taking care of others, which included 35 years at the Hot Springs (SD) VA Hospital as a Nursing Assistant until her retirement in January 2013.
Berchia loved to read, work various puzzles, play card games and having her family visit from Colorado, Arizona, Nebraska, California and Germany.
She will be sadly missed by her children: son, Warren Marc Erickson of Craig, and daughter and son-in-law, Carla and Craig Clement of Maricopa, AZ; granddaughter and great-grandchildren, Jennifer Kleeb, Emma and Adian of Hastings, NE; grandson, Arthur Kleeb of Landstuhl, Germany; sister, Lillie Norman of Chadron, NE; sister & brother-in-law, Cleda and Chris Erickson of Redwood Valley, CA; and sister-in-law, Mary Ann Miller of Tuscan, AZ. Berchia also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews, extending into great and great-greats.
Berchia was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Edward Miller; brother-in-law, Donald Norman; nephew, Paul Miller; nieces, Starla Norman and Jean Ann Alexander; and great-nephew, Richard Bonacorso.
Berchia requested no funeral or memorial services to be given, however, a gathering of family and friends is planned for June 7, 2014, in Hot Springs. Details to be posted at a later date.
