Lanior Pedersen

Feb. 20, 1914 - Jan. 5, 2016

Lanoir R. Pedersen of Custer, SD, formerly of Provo, SD, passed away peacefully in her home, January 5, 2016, at the age of 101.

On February 20, 1914, Lanoir was the first of eight children born to Howard and Ida (Mullinex) Royer of Woodbine, Iowa. Lanoir started rural school on her sixth birthday and at 12 graduated 8th grade with the highest average grade in the county that year. Too young to go to high school, after one year, Lanoir entered Woodbine Normal School and graduated in 1931 as salutatorian. After taking college preparatory courses, Lanoir returned to a normal school for one year and received her Iowa State Teacher's certificate. Some thought she was still too young to teach.

Growing up on the farm, Lanoir learned gardening and canning, and since her mother was a seamstress, Lanoir learned to make her clothes, quilts, crotchet, hand hemstitch, cut-work, etc. Lanoir married Clarence Leonard in 1933 and their son, Lloyd, was born in 1935. Lanoir taught in rural schools and later was divorced. Lanoir married Harry V. Pedersen in 1943. After World War II, he left the U. S. Army Corps and they moved to the Black Hills Army Depot at Igloo, SD, where, in 1946, their son, Victor, was born. Lanoir taught 8th grade math, English and history in the Provo schools, where both boys graduated. When the Depot closed they moved to Provo and Lanoir was a substitute teacher in the Edgemont, SD school until 1975, when she was appointed Postmaster at Provo Post Office. In 1986, her husband passed away. In 1992, at age 78, Lanoir retired. She was also clerk of Provo Township for 25 years. In 2006, due to health reasons, moved to Custer.

Recently Lanoir was heard to say, "I've had a full life." Lanior was an inspiration in her life and teachings. She is loved and will be deeply missed. Lanior was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 2 brothers, 4 sisters and son, Lloyd.

She is survived by her son, Victor (Teresa) Pedersen, of Custer, SD; brother, Joe Royer, of Grand Island, NE; Sister, Wanda Teale, of Omaha, NE; grandchildren, Kimberly (James) Farahmand, and Nathan Pedersen, Arcata, of CA; great-grandchildren, Terik Pedersen, Elalio and Anna Farahmand; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

At her request, private services were held at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD.

memorial has been established, and donations may be sent to the Crawford Rescue Unit or Crawford Fire Department.

Sid, the only child of Aaron and Mildred Kinser Hoar, was born on June 28, 1936 in Edgemont, SD. He went to be with Jesus on June 14, 2016, just two weeks short of his 80th birthday and 59th wedding anniversary.

Sid lived most of his life in Crawford, NE. He attended and graduated from high school in Igloo, SD. After graduation, he attended Chadron State College, graduating with a teaching degree in Industrial Arts and Driver's Education.

On June 28, 1957, he married the love of his life, Carol Darlene Hughes of Crawford, NE. To this union, two daughters were born, Cathy and Jeanne.

He worked in the grocery business his whole life.

Sid loved bowling, playing cards, and watching rodeos, especially the bull riding. His favorite sports teams were the Denver Broncos, the Colorado Rockies, and, of course, the Nebraska Cornhuskers. He especially liked watching his grandchildren play sports for the Crawford Rams team.

Sid had a sense of humor, and anyone who knew him got a taste of his teasing. He was a man of few words, a wonderful listener, and his undeniable understanding of faith and love for Jesus was quietly expressed to his family.

On June 14, 2016, Sid took his final breath of earthly air, threw off the confines of his oxygen tank and tangling hoses, and breathed in the life-giving air of heaven for the first time. He will be dearly missed by his family and all who knew him. As his grandson so aptly expressed, "We'll see you later!"

Margrit Biever Mondavi

August 2, 1925 - Sept. 5, 2016

NAPA, Calif. - Margrit Biever Mondavi, the widow of the California wine pioneer Robert G. Mondavi and for many decades his company's cultural affairs director, died at her home here on Friday. She was 91.

The cause was cancer, said Keith Roberts, her son-in-law.

The Mondavis were among the producers who helped turn the agricultural Napa Valley area, northeast of San Francisco, into a world-renowned wine region. "She and her husband invented the modern wine business in California, and the United States," Mr. Roberts said.

Ms. Mondavi, an accomplished painter, was the Robert Mondavi Winery's vice president of cultural affairs and, the winery said in a statement, worked to combine wine with fine art, music and food by creating "a showplace for painters, sculptors, photographers, jazz and classical musicians, and the great chefs and winemakers of the world."

She founded the winery's Summer Music Festival in 1969 as a benefit for the local symphony. Performers who have appeared at the festival over the years include Ella Fitzgerald, Harry Belafonte and Tony Bennett. A winter classical music series was begun in 1984 to benefit local music organizations.

Ms. Mondavi also introduced cooking classes at the winery, which evolved into a "Great Chefs" series, and curated its art exhibitions.

She continued to work for the Robert Mondavi Winery after it was sold to Constellation Brands in 2004.

Margrit Kellenberger was born in Appenzell, Switzerland, on Aug. 2, 1925. She and her first husband, Philip Biever, a captain in the United States Army, moved to the Napa Valley in 1960, and she went to work at the Robert Mondavi Winery in 1967, a year after it was founded.

She married Robert Mondavi in 1980, after both their marriages ended in divorce. Mr. Mondavi died in 2008.

Ms. Mondavi is survived by two daughters, Annie Roberts, with whom she wrote the 2003 book "Annie and Margrit: Recipes and Stories From the Robert Mondavi Kitchen," and Phoebe Holbrook; a son, Philip Biever; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

(Margrit was the Swiss bride of Capt. Philip Biever and their first assignment stateside was Black Hills Ordnance Depot. They were at Igloo for two years including during the Blizzard of 49.)
