First round games of Igloo's Gold Medal Basketball Tournament were played here last Sunday with spectators seeing some very high-scoring affairs.
In first round action, the Southern Hills Bank team of Edgemont romped to a 125-68 victory over Morrill, Nebr; and the Rapid City Community Service Center downed Gaughen's Dairy of Lead, 65-59. In other first round games, Rapid City Canyon Lake Club squeeked by Custer, 51-47; and Igloo's team - Anderson's Hot Shots - poured it on Jud's Tavern of Lead to the tune of 133-72.
Gene Smith, Spearfish, playing for the Southern Hills Bank, lived up to expectations as a former Minneapolis Laker pro and poured in 49 points in his first game. Other high scorers included Igloo players Dan Goodman, Joe Lytle 21; and Jack Ecklund with 20.
Action resumes in the tourney this Saturday with games scheduled at 5:00, 6:45, 8:30 and 10:15. All positions will be decided Sunday with final games set at 2:00, 4:00, 7:00 and the championship game at 9:00.
